Urseline Academy, Dedham, MA

The Science Wing at Ursuline Academy, a secondary school for girls, provides four teaching laboratories, a computer classroom, and staff offices. Although the wing is attached to a Modern school building of 1950’s vintage, its other near neighbor on the campus is a Neo-Georgian mansion. By turning to the simplified Scandinavian Neo-Classicism of the 1920’s for the exterior of the new wing, the architects were able to mediate between the conflicting styles. A cupola-crowned stair tower marks the entrance to the Science Wing and provides a focal point for entire building. (Keefe Associates 1999)
