Providence College, Providence, RI

With the building of the Smith Center for the Arts, Providence College brought its signature Collegiate Gothic style to the East Campus. The tripartite massing of the exterior expresses the three major performance spaces within: the 300-seat Blackfriars Theatre, a concert hall, and a “black box” studio theatre. A gallery for changing art exhibits, which opens off the entrance lobby, gives a nod to the visual arts. The Center also incorporates a full range of teaching and support spaces: a dance studio, screening room, rehearsal rooms, scenery and costume shops, dressing rooms, and faculty offices.
