Archdiocese of Boston, West Medford, MA

The first St. Raphael’s Church on this site, a Mediterranean-style edifice with white stucco walls and a red tile roof, was destroyed by fire. Its replacement, inspired by the Romanesque churches of northern Italy, is clad in seam-face granite. The most striking external feature is a steeple-capped bell tower. The interior, with heavy timber columns and trusses, strikes a New England note; deep-blue stained glass windows and custom furnishings in wood and stone create a memorable setting for the liturgy.
