The Smith Arts Center caters to both performing arts – music and drama – and visual arts – painting, sculpture and photography. Its centerpiece, a 300-seat thrust-stage theatre, features steeply-raked seating, a convertible orchestra pit, a flexible-width proscenium, and complete scene-shifting equipment. The flanking wings house an art studio with north light and a music room for classes and glee-club rehearsals. On the exterior, tall Doric pilasters and a hipped roof indicate the scale of the theatre within. (Basnight, Buckingham & Partners 1992)
