New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, MA

We were surprised to learn, in the course of our work on the New England Historic Genealogical Society’s building, that it started out as a bank, albeit an exceptionally elegant one. For several decades the original banking room, replete with fireplace, oak paneling, and crystal chandeliers, languished as an oversized foyer. We added unobtrusive shelving and provided enhanced security to create a periodical reading room, called the Treat Rotunda, and to accommodate a reception desk and a gift shop.
