Private Residence, Hull, MA

On the plus side, the site of this house is blessed with salt marsh and harbor views; on the negative side, it slopes steeply up from the road and it is strewn rock outcroppings and boulders.  The slope dictated the plans, with the garage at road level and the living areas elevated to take advantage of the views.  The rugged landscape encouraged us to create a picturesque composition and use rough-textured materials such as fieldstone and cedar shingles.  The outcome is, we believe, a worthy example of what Vincent Scully christened “The Shingle Style”.
